Thanks to Those Who Serve

Major Samuel ("Sam") C. Leigh was a Belgrade native. In 1992 he graduated from Messalonskee High School in Oakland where both his parents were teachers for three decades. He attended Norwich University, a military academy in Vermont. And, he successfully followed his dream of a career in the military. In October 2009, he was killed in a mid-air collision off the coast of San Diego in a Marine training accident, an incident that received national headlines. Major Samuel C. Leigh served two tours of duty in Iraq and was expecting to go to Afghanistan for a third tour of duty. His specialty was training new pilots, and mentoring all who had a passion to become military aviators. He enjoyed the life he chose and intended to make it a career. Being a marine was a decision he had made as early as age 3.

To honor his memory and service to country, his close friends from high school have created the Samuel C. Leigh Memorial Scholarship Fund to remember and honor the ultimate sacrifice that Major Samuel C. Leigh and countless other brave men and women have made fighting to protect the freedoms that we all enjoy. Specifically, the Samuel C. Leigh Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to young men and women who exemplify Major Leigh's commitment to excellence through community and scholastic achievement within the Messalonskee School District.

The first fund-raising event will be the Samuel C. Leigh Memorial Golf Tournament held at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club on Sunday, September 5. For more information about the scholarship fund and its namesake, visit
